Notes
This figure is based on a small, 22 inch bronze from 1909 by French artist Henri Matisse called The Serpentine. Dibble is interested in the way that in his figure sculptures, Matisse made very ‘plastic’, very three-dimensional forms, while in his paintings he was known for his use of flat, decorative pattern. Dibble has played on a shift between the flat and the solid in this sculpture.
