“Since its inception in 1971 the Hansells Sculpture Exhibition has been the most important event in New Zealand sculpture as the only regular format for sculptors to show their work in the country….. At the time of the 1978 exhibition, the 7th Hansells Sculpture Exhibition was slanted towards static object sculptures, mounted for the most part indoors was no longer representative of either the wide diversity of media being utilised by sculptors over the past few years nor of the main directions in which New Zealand sculpture was moving….
