Text

“Since its inception in 1971 the Hansells Sculpture Exhibition has been the most important event in New Zealand sculpture as the only regular format for sculptors to show their work in the country….. Now on a biennial basis…” Taken from Art Network magazine issue No. 2 Spring 1980.

“Paul Dibble arrived in Masterton two days before the exhibition began on 2 April to install his Keeping Alive Ancient Dreams of Freedom Through Flight. Description: A welded polythene man shaped envelope with feathered wings and Perspex limbs attached suspended over a tub of blue dye which circulates throughout its transparent interior. The whole is contained within a transparent plastic curtained box. A label with the inscription ‘Icarus’ hangs from one wing and reference is clearly made to twentieth century aero- and astronautics.”
